For the most part, the general public is really pulling together to help each other through the Pandemic of 2020. However, there are always a few bad apples in the barrel. There are some that are taking advantage of this situation that most of the world is in. These have created the COVID-19 scams. Unfortunately, they are increasing in number and are of course targeting the most vulnerable.
Computer Attacks
You have probably seen an influx of emails that have COVID-19 as the subject. These are automatically going to grab your attention. Most of us are hungry for any information we can get on this deadly virus. The scam here is the links and attachments that can be in one of these emails. They are set up for malware and phishing. Opening these links can set up for the intruder to put information in your computer that will allow them to access your personal information. The solution is not to open up any email that is coming from someone you are not familiar with, and definitely not clicking on the links.
False Emails
Another type of email scamp is when an individual receives emails for them to change their account details. These can look as though they are coming from legitimate companies telling you to update your info.
These are examples of the average run of the mill scams that take place with or without a pandemic. There have been some new ones added to the list.
Investing
Most would think that investing has been put on the back burner because of the virus. But, there are a lot that are capitalizing on the market. There are some ideal opportunities for getting in on some good investments at low prices for those that have some extra money to invest. However, it is also creating a golden opportunity for investment scans. Emails may be coming into your mailbox that is advertising investment opportunities but they contain the phishing emails mentioned above. Those that are interested in investing now should only do so through reputable resources.
Fake Relief
Another type of scam that has begun to circulate regarding relief funds that look like they may be coming from the government through emergency funding. The email will give you a link that allows you to enter your personal banking information. This is dangerous as no reputable government agency would ask you to do this through an email.
Job Scams
These are false job postings asking people to fill in their information for the job position including asking for their banking information. Supposedly so direct payments can be made for work performed. However, this is just another way to steal information.
Donations
Be on the lookout for those who may approach you looking for donations. These are tough times and many legitimate charity organizations are reaching out for financial help. It is good to help them when possible but be sure to check out their credentials very carefully.
There will be new scams surfacing on a continuous basis. The key to avoiding this is to remain alert. Don’t venture into anything including opening a simple email without giving it some thought.
