It used to be when individuals went job seeking that it meant getting up at dawn, having a good breakfast, dressing appropriately, then hitting the streets. The consensus was to be at the individual company doors as soon as they opened so you could apply for employment. Job seeking has drastically changed over the years.
Now the norm is to get up at whatever time you normally do, grab a cup of coffee and sit down at the computer probably still wearing your PJ’s and start emailing resumes, or searching the tons of job search sites.
So which is better? Is our new modern technology hurting the chances of finding good employment? Some say no this is the only way to go. Many potential employers are fully modernized and rely on their technology for many different factors for their business including finding potential employees. By having all of the resumes collected into their email they can quickly sort out those that are not viable.
For the job seeker it is time effective. They can disseminate a whole lot more resumes via the internet then they can by physically going around to each location.
While this modern technology has its sweet spot it may also have a downside, but one that can be corrected. With the old way once the job seeker walked out of his door his mindset was to find a job. He was dressed for it which added to his confidence. He probably rehearsed his pitch concerning his assets and attributes.
When sitting down at the computer in PJ’s and a coffee it may create a lackadaisical attitude which could very easily show in the cover letter. The advice here is to be very aware that you are making a virtual presentation of yourself and if you really want to land that great job you are after, then give this a lot of thought.
Employers want to make finding their next employee as easy as possible. The government is astute at making job hiring as easy as possible in order to bring down the unemployment rate. To help with this they have a section called the Service Canada Job Bank. Here employers get to post their jobs at no cost.
Recently they added a new tool to this service called job match. This allows the job ads to be matched up with the job seeker’s profiles. Most employees will probably find this most helpful, so it reduces the number of responses they may get from a posting. Now employers can reach out to potential candidates for their jobs, based on the matched profile and ask them to apply.
While this is geared towards helping the employer it is also a very useful tool for the job seeker. For those that are already listed on Job Match, in order for this new resource to be beneficial they will need to re-register.
