Everybody wants your business no matter what industry it is. The same applies when it comes to your taxes. There are tons of what class themselves as professionals out there that are more than willing to do your tax return for you.
You may notice this year that some of these tax preparation companies want your business so bad they will even entice you with gift cards or other perks, like long hours of operation for your convenience, or weekend hours.
Of course everyone wants a bargain, but when it comes to your taxes you really need to think twice about this. Often when we make a poor purchase we simply accept it and learn from our mistakes, making sure the product or service we bought that disappointed us won’t be one that we are buying in the future.
A tax mistake however, can be a costly one and one that goes on for a good period of time. It can mean the difference in you getting a tax return. Or worse still it could mean you becoming scrutinized by the tax department even though you intentionally did nothing wrong.
In these cases your first thought is to go back to the expert that did our taxes for you. Only problem is oops, they are no longer there, yet they were located in a large department store perhaps, or in kiosks in your favorite mall. Well now that could be a real problem, for you and not for them. Sure you immediately decide not to use them next year, but that doesn’t help with the situation that you are now in.
Hopefully it is a rather simple mistake, and even though a disappointing one, it has been corrected by the CRA. It may very well mean you are not getting that big tax return that you were counting on, but at least you don’t own them anything. This is the minimal repercussions of tax return mistakes. What about if you are now being demanded by the CRA to produce extra documents? You don’t understand why and suddenly you are in a panic.
Fortunately you still have an opportunity to seek out the services of a well established and stationery tax accountant. This experienced professional will be able to identify what the CRA is questioning and why. They will also be able to assist you in complying with the tax laws that you at present don’t seem to be doing.
While this is most upsetting to you, look at the bright side. You have at least now found yourself a qualified accountant that is going to be there all year long. You can build a business relationship with this professional that will be able to guide you throughout the year with your tax matters and tax planning. You might not get a gift certificate or some other incentive, but you are going to get some good tax preparation services that will stand behind you.
