Entrepreneurs have no shortage of enthusiasm and a zest for making their business a success. What they may be lacking in is time to do some networking. They may even be lacking in the realization of why this is so important.
They often perceive networking as socializing and cannot comprehend how this fits into the progression of the business. It is not very often you will see this type of new business owner taking time out to have coffee or dinner with a business associate unless it is a direct client and there may be a deal to be closed.
Networking however is critically important to helping a business grow although perhaps not always in the short term but most definitely in the long term. Networking is an investment of time into the business.
Just as there has to be specific plans in place for all segments of the business like marketing for example, there should be a plan in place for networking. Meeting and seminars and conventions may seem like a waste of time but if the goal for attending is well laid out then they can be a great networking resource. Going with the goal in mind to meet three contacts then proposing some sort of follow up with get the networking strategy off the ground. A little research before attending will help in determining who else will be attending and what prospects will be there that can benefit the business.
Business owners should make it a point to find out what types of events their competitors are attending then put the effort into attending themselves.
Attending and being prepared to make some contacts is one thing and being prepared is another. Make sure you have plenty of business cards on hand. Be sure to conduct yourself in an acceptable manner even if it is a social event. Having one too many to drinks and networking don’t make for a good mix.
Don’t be shy and just reserve yourself to groups that you already know, venture out and meet new people. When you do get into a business conversation keep in mind on what you can do for others, and don’t emphasize on what they can do for you.
When you do complete a conversation make sure you leave the doors open for further contact, then follow through with this.
While this talks about networking off the internet don’t underestimate the power of online networking and this all begins with building a presence on the various social media platforms.
