Almost every student is in dire need of some type of summer employment. The problem is there are lots of students in Toronto and the surrounding area, but not nearly enough jobs to go around. For some students this is never a problem because they tend to have some entrepreneurship qualities about them, which helps them to be innovative.
How about some pool maintenance:
Toronto has some very high caliber neighborhoods in which many of the homeowners have swimming pools. Many of them don’t bother contacting large pool companies for maintenance for their pools. Yet at the same time they find it a hassle. Most of these pool owners want to do no more than just get into the pool and enjoy it.
A summer student could easily set up their own mini company that caters to this need. Keeping the prices reasonable and focusing on volume could bring in a significant amount of money for helping towards the upcoming school costs.
The best part about this type of business is there is very little tools and equipment needed. Just make sure that the deal includes the pool owner supplying all that is needed to maintain the pool.
Yard work can pay off:
There are lots of people who cannot afford or want to hire a regular gardener. This is a small business that you can set up for the summer months quite easily as well. Being as you are not promoting yourself as a professional you can strike the same deal where they supply the equipment. Surely they will all have a lawn mower and the necessary gardening tools. For a reasonable price they will be more than happy to have you do the job for them.
Mini outdoor catering:
If you happen to be a food buff then why not start your own small barbecue catering business. Focus on the family events. Almost every family has a weekend where they have a family gathering. A lot of them would just jump at the chance of not having to barbecue so they too could enjoy the socializing while you do all the work.
Instructions:
If you happen to be good at some type of sport or other venue consider offering private lessons. Chances are there are a lot of parents right in your neighbourhood that wouldn’t mind having private swim lessons or sports lessons for the kids.
Don’t forget that this is business, so you need to do your due diligence and keep your accounting records in order. It can have an impact on your year end tax situation.
